Hutchins Center for African and African American Research

Hutchins Center for African & African American Research: Visualizing a bold purpose

The Hutchins Center houses a group of world-leading research institutes and programs dedicated to the creation of cutting-edge knowledge in the field of African and African American research.

The center encompasses, among other initiatives, the W.E.B. Du Bois Research Institute, the Hiphop Archive & Research Institute, the Afro-Latin American Research Institute, the Image of the Black Archive & Library, the Ethelbert Cooper Gallery for African & African American Art and two publications - the Du Bois Review and Transition Magazine.

BMD worked with Henry Louis Gates Jr., director of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute, philanthropist Glenn Hutchins and their esteemed colleagues to define the brand architecture and develop a visual identity system.

BMD also worked with bv02, an Ottawa based digital firm, to develop a new website for the Hutchins Center. In addition, BMD collaborated with Think/Feel, a Brooklyn based filmmaking team, on a short documentary celebrating this important step in the Hutchins Center’s trajectory.
