Gagosian Gallery: Giving form to a world of art

Larry Gagosian, owner of the Gagosian Gallery chain of art galleries, asked BMD to develop a fresh design for the Gagosian graphic identity. It had to be simple, elegant, economical, flexible, practical and unforgettable. It had to be understated and distinctive - yet perform like a gallery space - neutral and discreet.

The result was designing a custom typeface that emphasizes the solid, assured and contemporary qualities of the galleries. A typeface that cannot be used by anyone else, and that is exclusive to the Gagosian Gallery.

BMD applied the identity system to all of the gallery’s exhibition catalogues, multimedia projects, advertising, posters, invitations, stationery, and environmental graphics.

Designed exclusively for the Gagosian Gallery, the font is a hybrid of three different fonts - Futura, Interstate and DIN Mittleshrift.

Over the years, BMD designed approximately 50 publications for the gallery, featuring works by Andy Warhol, Douglas Gordon, Georg Baselitz, David Salle, Willem de Kooning, Richard Hamilton, Ellen Gallagher, Pablo Picasso, Ed Ruscha and many others.

Designed in response to the art and the artists, the publication program features essays by some of the most important art writers, curators and public intellectuals in the world.
