Institute Without Boundaries

Avoid Fences, Jump Fields

Complex projects demand a certain kind of designer, one who, in the words of Buckminister Fuller, "is an emerging synthesis of artist, inventor, mechanic, objective economist and evolutionary strategist."

In 2003, BMD founded the Institute Without Boundaries, a post-graduate studio-based program offered in partnership with the School of Design at George Brown College in Toronto.

Here, we look to produce that new breed of designer by offering students the opportunity to solve real-world design problems.

So that they continually resist the simple solution in favor of the real opportunities inherent in a project.

Like Massive Change, the Institute’s first problem and continuing opportunity.

At the Institute, we imagine how to learn, live, work and play together as a global community.

We aim to create new models that are collaborative, holistic and affirmative.

We push past boundaries to find and explore alternate development patterns and viable paths toward a sustainable future.

Helping all of us to re-envision the designer as an evolutionary strategist with the ability create beautiful, healthy, sustaining environements that affect positive change for humanity.
