Toronto Carpet Factory: Making something new, somewhere old

The Toronto Carpet Factory is an iconic landmark of Toronto’s booming manufacturing era. Built between 1899 and 1912, the seven buildings take up an entire city block, creating a complex of historical architecture and converted factories. Carefully restored and updated, the factory is now home to over 120 businesses.

BMD was hired by York Heritage and Hullmark to develop a new identity and wayfinding system to unite and better define the unique character of the buildings.

BMD conducted interviews with partners, tenants, and real estate agents to develop a new brand position for the Toronto Carpet Factory. A focus on historic preservation and contemporary activation informed a vibrant, flexible new identity which visually unites the various buildings. The identity becomes a way for us to image the entire campus.

The identity also becomes the wayfinding. In order to help people navigate at the complex site, we developed a system based on the silhouettes and color palette.

The identity also becomes the wayfinding.

BMD also designed a new website for the TCF that features its history, features and complex-wide directory.

Historic preservation and contemporary activation informed a vibrant identity which unites the various buildings.

The collection of bright, playful and modern silhouettes signals a contemporary space for work and community.
