Big Blue Bus

The Big Blue Bus, Santa Monica's growing transit system, was looking to combine the rider experience with the high-end casual feeling of the city. Alongside Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects, Bruce Mau Design was invited to develop a forward-looking re-design for the brand identity of the bus stop and shelters redevelopment.

The project stretches across the system's full brand architecture, including displays of information at all bus stops in Santa Monica. The new brand captures the unique character of the Big Blue Bus as a friendly and sustainable world-class public transportation agency.

Taking cue from the circular water-inspired super-graphics created as part of the visual identity system, the architects implemented a shelter design that uses elevated blue dots to create strategically angled shade and cascading light patterns on the ground.

BMD then had the opportunity to extend the brand identity system across the entire fleet. By translating the new look and feel of the "Mini," "Rapid" and original bus designs, we established visual continuity for the brand family, maximizing the potential of the new identity.

Along with our work on the fleet, we developed a new mapping system for the Big Blue Bus, creating 7 local maps for the medium and high-volume bus stops.
