BMD hosts design conference in Denmark

Bruce Mau Design, in collaboration with Designskolen Kolding and Urgent Agency, hosted the first annual Brand x (Place) Conference in Kolding, Denmark. The conference was themed around the emerging discipline of place branding, provoked by the question: What if branding, usually aligned strictly with corporate interests, could now be used to identify, promote, and visualize a larger public good - municipally, regionally and nationally?

We had a great list of speakers, including: David Zahle of Bjarke Ingels Group, Ulrik Jungersen of the Kolding Municipality, Mads Quistgaard & Christian Pagh of Urgent Agency, Hunter Tura of Bruce Mau Design, and Martin Gran of Snohetta.

The students of DSK presented the final projects of their Place Branding module, in two groups. The first group was tasked with developing a brand for the Danish city of Billund, home of the LEGO and Legoland but not much else. The result was a new proposed brand for Billund, "The City of Children" built around themes of play, exploration and discovery for both children and adults. The second student group was challenged to redesign their own city of Kolding. A condensed research phase, conceptualization and design development informed the new identity, Our Kolding

The conference took place on May 29th, 2015 at Designskolen Kolding. The lectures were recorded and can be viewed on the Brandx(Place) website as well as in a forthcoming book. We want to thank all the speakers, students and organizers for a great event and thoughtful discussion.
